Charles L Dorothy

Charles (Charlie) Dorothy graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1974. After fulfilling his military service obligation as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of South Dakota, and as an Assistant States Attorney for Minnehaha County, South Dakota. He entered private practice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota 1980.

Since 1990, Charlie has focused on business clients. This has involved assisting clients with a variety of entrepreneurial and business issues such as (1) creation and termination of business entities; (2) sale and purchase of selected assets of business entities; (3) sale and purchase of the ownership interests of business entities; (4) succession planning (e.g. employee and family purchase of ownership interests); (5) real estate transactions; (6) internal management and organizational matters; (7) internal relationships between owners; (8) internal relationships between the entity and employees; (9) external relationships (e.g. leases, purchase agreements, service and product delivery agreements); (10) banking arrangements; (11) insurance arrangements; and (12) risk management (i.e. reducing the risk of lawsuits and managing those in progress).

As he and his clients have aged, Charlie has become increasingly involved in wills, trusts, financial planning for the elderly years, guardianships, conservatorships, and probate matters.

Charlie handles legal matters in the tri-state area of southeastern South Dakota, northeastern Iowa, and southwestern Minnesota, in conjunction with attorneys licensed in Iowa and Minnesota.

He has an extensive background in litigation, both as a Plaintiff and as a Defendant in civil matters, but is active in mediation, both as a mediator, and as an attorney advising those engaged in the mediation process.
